NOT-OD-26-062
Effective June 1, 2026, NIH will require prior approval when adding a new domestic subaward to an existing project if the subaward was not included in the originally approved application.
NIH has historically not required prior approval for adding domestic subawards post-award. Under this updated policy:
- Prior approval is now required for new domestic subawards added after award issuance
- Applies to all NIH grants and cooperative agreements
- Only applies when the subaward was not part of the peer-reviewed application
Additional Reminder
As of May 1, 2025, NIH no longer recognizes foreign subawards. Recipients seeking to establish new international collaborations must use the approved NIH application structure for international components (e.g., PF5/UF5).
