The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) has multiple opportunities open now:

OREF/Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation Research Grant

  • Purpose: Solicits investigator-initiated proposals focusing on research in the science of biologic – reconstruction, bone regeneration, transplantation - allografts, and including stem cells for graft transplantation.
  • Eligibility: New investigators who have demonstrated a sustained interest in research and excellence in their training are encouraged to apply. Multidisciplinary research activity is strongly encouraged. An orthopaedic surgeon PI must be licensed to practice in the US and be working in an institution in the US. A PhD may serve as the PI and must hold a faculty appointment in an orthopaedic department.

OREF/ASES Rockwood Clinical Shoulder Research Grant

  • Purpose: Provides funding for new investigators to conducting research in the area of shoulder care.
  • Eligibility: Either the PI or co-PI must be a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. The PI must be a new investigator, defined as an individual who has not received an R01 NIH grant or equivalent in the role of PI. An orthopaedic surgeon PI must be licensed to practice in the US. A PhD may serve as the PI and must hold a faculty appointment in an orthopaedic department. 
  • Award Budget: $50,000

OREF/Goldberg Arthritis Research Grant

  • Purpose: Provides seed and start-up funding for promising research projects that address issues related to the treatment of arthritis with an emphasis on arthroplasty.
  • Eligibility: The PI must be a new investigator, defined as an individual who has not received an R01 NIH grant or equivalent in the role of PI. An orthopaedic surgeon PI must be licensed to practice in the US. A PhD may serve as the PI and must hold a faculty appointment in an orthopaedic department.  A DVM may serve as the PI but must have a primary appointment in an orthopaedic department. Listing an orthopaedic surgeon as the Co-PI is required.

OREF Prevention of Musculoskeletal Youth Sports Injuries Research Grant in Honor of James Andrews, MD 

OREF Mentored Clinician Scientist Grant

  • Purpose: Promotes the development of new clinician scientists who have demonstrated success as both a clinician and a researcher. Allows investigators to spend dedicated time in research for a period of up to five years to develop a long and productive career in academic surgery.
  • Eligibility: The applicant must demonstrate success in research by receiving extramural research funding under one or more K08 or K23 awards from the NIH or equivalent funding source. 
  • Award Budget: $20,000, renewable annually for up to 5 years.
