NIH is reminding the extramural research community that certification of final IRB approval is required for all nonexempt human subjects research before funds can be used for those activities.
IRB Approval
- Certification is generally submitted through Just-in-Time (JIT) procedures, unless an NIH Institute, Center, or Office (ICO) requires it earlier.
- Pending, conditional, interim, or expired IRB approvals will not be accepted as approval.
- NIH may issue an award with a restriction stating that no human subjects research may be conducted until IRB certification is received and approved or withhold the award until the certification is received.
- Applies to competing and certain non-competing awards involving human subjects.
