NSF Resumption of Operations FAQ

Previous Notice

Current Notice

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has resumed operations under a continuing resolution through January 30, 2026.

NSF is prioritizing urgent activities, including restoring award-making capacity and ensuring oversight of existing awards. Staff are working through significant backlogs, so response times may be slower than usual.

Proposals & Funding Opportunities

  • Proposals submitted during the shutdown remain valid and will be processed in order received.
  • Delays in reviews and funding decisions are expected, with priority given to time-sensitive research, student or trainee support, and projects with critical field or seasonal timelines.
  • Changes requested after proposal deadlines require program officer approval. NSF cannot reopen closed deadlines unless a revised solicitation or notice is issued.

Payments

  • The ACM$ payment system remained operational; institutions may continue drawing funds for allowable costs.
  • Expenditures allowable under award terms remain reimbursable.
  • Reports submitted via Research.gov will be processed in order received.
  • NSF will prioritize award actions based on urgency and programmatic impact, particularly those tied to student support or near-term project start dates.
  • Awards that expired during the shutdown may request a no-cost extension; late submissions should document shutdown impact.

Award Management

  • Reports submitted through Research.gov will be processed in order received.
  • Award actions will be prioritized based on programmatic need, urgency, student support, and near-term project timelines.
  • Awards that expired during the shutdown may request a no-cost extension; justification should note shutdown-related delays.
