Pilot Format
The NIH has released a new 2026 Pilot Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan format, which is now available for use with both competing and non-competing applications. While this format has not yet received OMB clearance, NIH has indicated that the pilot form will still be required for upcoming submissions.
- A simplified 2026 Pilot DMS Plan format is now available and recommended for investigators who are beginning to prepare their DMS Plans.
- The 2026 format will be required for all applications with due dates on or after May 25, 2026.
- For applications with due dates prior to May 25, 2026, NIH will accept either the 2023 or 2026 DMS Plan formats.
UCSF researchers are encouraged to begin using the new format now for the May 25, 2026, implementation date.
Additional information to assist investigators in preparing, including budgeting their DMS plan, is available on the UCSF Library website. NIH-specific guidance: NIH Writing a DMS Plan
